Varanasi is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centers for the Hindus,
which is known for its great antiquity and religious virtue. The holy
city of Varanasi is situated along the west bank of the sacred Ganges
in Uttar Pradesh, India.
Varanasi Temples
Temples form the major source of attraction in this ancient city. The
holy temples of Varanasi are amongst the most visited temples in India,
and every year hundreds of thousands of devotees come here on pilgrimage.
Vishwanath Temple, devoted to lord Shiva, is the most sacred
temple of Varanasi. It is located near Dashashwamedh ghat, in old Varanasi.
The Vishwanath Temple was planned by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya and
was built by the Birlas.
Sankat Mochan Mandir is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. On Tuesdays
thousands of devotees visit this beautiful temple.
The Tulsi Manas Temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. It is said
that Goswami Tulsidas composed 'Ramacharitramanas' at the place where
the temple is located.
The Durga Temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, consort of Shiva,
is built in north Indian Nagara style with an ornate shikhara, consisting
of five segments and supported by finely carved columns.
The Bharat Mata Temple houses, instead of idols of gods and
goddesses, a huge relief map of India, carved out of marble.
Kaal Bhairav Temple, dedicated to Kaal Bhairav, who is so powerful
that even death is scared of him. People, who go on pilgrim visit to
Varanasi, do not forget to visit Kaal Bhairava Temple.
Reaching the Temples
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (India) is easily accessible through air, road
and rail from the other major Indian cities and states.
For visiting temples you can take auto-rickshaws, hand-rickshaws and
taxis. In the crowded parts of old Varanasi it's best to walk down.
