Golden Temple
Golden Temple, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Darbar Sahib,
is the holiest shrine of Sikhs. The Sikhs from all over the world visit
Golden Temple to pay obeisance.
It was Guru Arjun Sahib who conceived the idea of creating this magnificent
religious structure, and he himself designed the architecture of Golden
Temple. The architecture of Golden Temple is marked by a rich synthesis
of best of Hindu and Islamic architectural traditions. It was in 1570
that the construction work on the holy Sarovar (the tank) and the town
started. The foundation of the sarovar was laid by renowned sufi saint
Hazrat Mian Mir of Lahore. The building work was completed in 1601 A.D.
There are four entrances to the temple. Guru Arjun Sahib installed Guru
Granth Sahib, in Golden Temple. The temple was later attacked by the
Afghans under Ahmed Shah Abdali and was substantially rebuilt in the
1760s.
Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) is accessible to every person without
any distinction of caste, creed, sex and religion. The only restrictions
are that the person must not drink alcohol, eat meat or smoke cigarettes
or other drugs while in the holy shrine.
