Historical Monuments
The Red Fort known locally as Lal Quila, is reminiscent of
the wealth and power of the Mughal Empire. Today it is an important
insignia of the sovereignty of India, and India's National Flag is permanently
hoisted on its rampart.
Jama Masjid is located just opposite to the Red Fort. This grand
structure was constructed by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan between 1644 and
1656.
Purana Qila was built by the Afghan ruler, Sher Shah, who defeated
the mighty Mughals. He constructed several structures inside this sprawling
fort including a mosque. The antiquity of Purana Qila goes back to the
Mahabaharata period, and is generally associated with Indraprastha.
Qutab Minar is a five-storey tower constructed during the Delhi
Sultanate period in 13th century. Its construction was started by Qutubuddin
Aibak and completed by Firuz Tughlak. The first three storeys of Qutab
Minar are built of red sandstone, and the upper two with white marble.
The entire structure is decorated with calligraphy representing verses
from the Koran. At the foot of the Qutab Minar, stands Quwwat-ul-Islam,
India's oldest mosque.
Humayun's Tomb is the mausoleum of the Mughal Emperor Humayun. Its construction
was started in 1564 after his death, under the guidance of his wife
Haji Begum. It was the gift of a loyal wife to his beloved husband.
Other prominent tourist attractions in Delhi include India Gate,
Rashtrapati Bhawan, Lotus Temple, Shanti Van, Raj Ghat, ISKCON Temple,
and many more interesting locations.
Shopping Destinations
Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk, and South Extension are
